Frape coffee is one of the most Greek products that you can ever find. It is one of the latest inventions in this land, standing proudly next to philosophy, democracy and theater. A cold shaken instant coffee, suitable for hot summer days. People prefer it all year around and one can find it in three variants.
-Σκέτος (pronounced sketos). It is the variant with no sugar at all.
-Μέτριος (pronounced metreeos). The amount of coffee is equal to the amount of sugar.
-Γλυκός (pronounced gleekos). The sweet one. The amount of sugar is twice the amount of coffee.
Some people like some milk in it, usually canned milk. To help the waiter, when you order a frape you add at the end of your order either the word «me» (the e pronounced like in »the») or »horis» (the stress is on i). The first one means that you want milk in your coffee and the second that you don’t.
If you want to amaze the waiters and avoid extra questions from their part, because they love to ask questions, a full order can be : ένα φραπέ γλυκό με γάλα και ένα μπουκαλάκι εμφιαλωμένο νερό. Translation: one sweet frape with milk and a small bottle of water (a.k.a. no tap one).
Some frape coffee tips are following.
First of all the coffee is pre made. I mean that if you order coffee with sugar and they bring you one without, you do not ask sugar. You ask for a new coffee. Only in places you can actually see the barista though.
Second, frape is a strong coffee. If you drink it like espresso, you will have a very bad stomach.
Third, always ice cubes never shredded ice.
Finally, to really enjoy your coffee, remember to mix it often with your straw and relax. Because the frape is an idea. And ideas need time.
